iPhone screen broken - what to do? Explained step by step

One moment of inattention – and your iPhone is on the ground with a cracked display.

It happens faster than you think. Slipped out of a jacket pocket, fallen off a table, dropped onto the asphalt when getting out of the car – and suddenly the glass is broken, the touch no longer responds, or the display remains black.

The important thing now is: Don't panic. In many cases, an iPhone display can be repaired well – and often your data remains safe.

Here we show you step-by-step what you should do if your iPhone display is broken, when a repair is worthwhile, and how we at epos, as an Apple Authorized Service Provider in Vorarlberg, can help you.

1. First check: Does the iPhone still work?

Not every display damage is the same. Some iPhones only have a crack in the glass, others no longer respond to touch or show no image at all.

Carefully check:

  • Does the iPhone still turn on?
  • Does the touchscreen respond?
  • Do you see lines, spots, or black areas?
  • Does Face ID still work?
  • Can you still unlock the iPhone?

If glass splinters or the display is heavily damaged: Please do not press on it further. Small glass splinters can be unpleasant – and further pressing can worsen the damage.

2. If possible: Back up data

If your iPhone is still operable, the next step should be to back up your data. This is particularly important before a repair begins.

The easiest way is via iCloud:

  • Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup
  • Select "Back Up Now"

Alternatively, you can also back up your iPhone on a Mac.

If the display no longer responds or remains completely black: Don't worry. Just come by – we'll see together what's still possible and what the next sensible steps are.

If possible: create a current backup before repair

3. Check AppleCare+

Before you commission a repair, you should check whether your iPhone is covered by AppleCare+.

AppleCare+ can significantly reduce costs for accidental damage – for example, a broken display.

You can find the status directly on the iPhone:

  • Settings → General → About → Coverage

If you are unsure, we will gladly check it with you in the store.

4. Do not repair it yourself – especially not with cheap parts

When the iPhone display is broken, a cheap repair from the internet sometimes sounds tempting. But especially with an iPhone, this is risky.

Why?

  • Cheap displays can have poorer colors or brightness
  • Touch behavior can become inaccurate
  • Face ID or True Tone can be impaired
  • Water protection and stability can suffer
  • Subsequent service cases become more complicated

As an Apple Authorized Service Provider, we work according to Apple specifications and use exclusively Apple original parts. This keeps your iPhone as close as possible to its original condition – including clean diagnostics, professional repair, and documentation.

6. Is the repair still worth it?

For current iPhones, a display repair is very often worthwhile. Especially for high-end models, the residual value remains strong even after a repair.

For older devices, the decision is sometimes not so clear. Then we consider together:

  • Model and age of the iPhone
  • Current condition
  • Cost of repair
  • Residual value after repair
  • Alternative: new or newer iPhone

Our aim is not to sell you a repair at any cost. If a new device makes more economic sense, we will tell you honestly.

7. Sell a broken iPhone? That's also possible

Not every damaged iPhone has to be repaired.

If you prefer to switch to a new model, we will buy your old iPhone, even in damaged condition, at its current market value. The value depends on the model, condition, and defect.

This is particularly practical if:

  • the device is already older
  • multiple damages are present
  • you want to buy a new iPhone anyway
  • you don't have time or inclination for private sale

You can check the purchase here:

What you should avoid

If your iPhone display is broken, please do not:

  • continue to press hard on the cracked glass
  • open the device yourself
  • order cheap replacement parts
  • reset the iPhone before your data is backed up
  • wait too long if moisture or severe cracks are involved

Especially with severe damage: it's better to have it checked early before a display damage turns into greater damage.

Our conclusion: Check first, then decide

A broken iPhone display is annoying – but no reason to panic.

If possible, back up your data, check AppleCare+, and have your iPhone professionally assessed. After that, you can clearly decide whether a repair is worthwhile or if switching to a new device makes more sense.

As an Apple Authorized Service Provider, we help you with diagnostics, repair, express service, data questions, and – if desired – also with switching to a new iPhone.
